Prometheus Chained by NathanRosario Prometheus Chained by NathanRosario
This is a painting that I had wanted to do now for weeks and finally decided to take a little time from my freelance stuff to paint it. Let me know what you think!

Detail of this pic can be found here: [link]

Here is some info on this Myth:
Prometheus is a Titan who in Greek mythology is credited with the creation of man from clay and the theft of fire for human use, an act that enabled progress and civilization. He is known for his intelligence, and as a champion of mankind.

The punishment of Prometheus as a consequence of the theft is a major theme of his mythology. Zeus, king of the Olympian gods, sentenced the Titan to eternal torment for his transgression. The immortal Prometheus was bound to a rock, where each day an eagle, the emblem of Zeus, was sent to feed on his liver, only to have it grow back to be eaten again the next day.

And, the trick was that Prometheus will stay chained to Caucase untill another living been come, and replace him by his own free will. Imagine that did'nt happened for a long time...
Any way, there was a certain centaur who got beaten badly by Hercules and Hercules speared his life if he went and replace Prometheus. The poor centaur did that, and that is how Prometheus was released.
But, when Zeus heard of that, he gone mad, because he pormised to Prometheus that he will be forever chained to mountain Caucase, he did'nt actually bilived for a second that another misfortune creature will ever stand Prometheus's place.
So, in order to keep his promice he made Prometheus to wear a small ring with a rock of mountain Caucase forever. That is how Zeus could keep his word, and Prometheus could walk free...
Any way, great piece. I love it.

Why the liver?

I don't have an answer to that. I would guess that people's from older times felt that the liver was the center of the human being. Similarly to us associating the heart to our emotions and persona today.

True! Without electricity it would have been useless anyhow and therefore Zeus would have been okay with us having it.

Gorgeous, simple gorgeous! It really makes you pause for a moment to just admire it. So well done, and the attention to detail is amazing. It is the obvious thought and effort that went into the work that really brings it to the next level. The piece speaks for itself, with no explanation needed. It stirs the emotions. I wish I had just a portion of your talent :) It truly is a work of beauty

Why am I so fucking sure it was a vulture instead of an eagle?

I looked it up. The eagle is one of the symbols of Zeus (the other being the lightning bolt) and it's Zeus who punishes Prometheus. So it has to be an eagle that came to eat his liver.I had thought about having a vulture and even began painting one but in the end the Eagle was the right way to go.

I like his expression, like he's pissed at the bird but not surprised. "Yep, right on time as always you bastard bird!" Excellent job, everything here is perfectly placed and gorgeously colored... but one might wonder why you didn't portray this scene three minutes later?

Beautiful painting. And I love the legend too. Some say the Christians copied this story from the Greek mythology to create their own myths about Christ.
